There Was Once A Team: 132-0 Winning Streak, 5 State Championships

"There Was Once a Team" is an entertaining memoir of the five seasons in 1967-72 that saw the girls basketball teams from Taylor County High School in Butler, GA win 132 games in a row and five state championships. This state record for consecutive wins still holds in girls and boys basketball in Georgia after fifty years, is documented in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and is ranked fourth nationally for girls basketball on the National Federation of High Schools website. The acclaim for the book has not necessarily been because of the history of those games and girls who were part of those teams and the community, but more importantly the life lessons to be gleaned. Coach Norman Carter of Butler is the main focus of the book, for without his leadership, this feat would not have been accomplished. The record speaks for itself — this success in sports was quite a feat! Read more
