The ink behind the call to action. This text forms the backbone of Field’s educational offering: ‘The Defense Cascade - What if the Body Was Trying to Save You?’ The reader is invited to take a compassionate ride with our human DNA soup, as it does what it has always done: keep us alive in the face of rising demands. We observe a sequence of predictable actions that we are blind to today because we have arrived at a state of cultural poverty. As we have increasingly favoured hyper-rationality, we have failed to quarantine what that rationality relies upon: safety in the body. Resultantly, we take a path of collective ignorance towards ourselves, the validity of this sleepwalk maintained only by discarding the data we already hold in our species library.Inventing terms such as ‘treatment resistant,’ ‘non-responsive,’ and/or ‘residual symptoms,’ we have tasked ourselves with protecting the reputation of mass market approaches that, unfortunately, can be not only often ineffective, but far too commonly retraumatising, despite the best efforts of front-line defenders implementing the software we have all agreed upon.Whilst the adversity is denied and responses misunderstood, those suffering have more recently asked: What if I simply accepted myself right here, right now? What if I asked others to accept me right here, right now? Self-identification with a diagnosis, quite understandably born from social invalidation.Through an evolutionary approach that refreshingly roots itself in common sense rather than dogma, an empowering alternative is offered. What benefits might emerge if we decided to zoom out to an intergenerational perspective, zoom in to an uncommon all-access pass to lived experience, and filter both perspectives via an evidence-first research approach?By doing so, we recognise that the increasingly common conditions of ADHD, autism and panic disorder do not arrive overnight, nor even in one’s own lifetime. Field shares his own journey with all three diagnoses, but critically also the prior accumulation of disorganised states as diverse as school phobia, selective mutism, hyperhidrosis, anxiety, depression, burnout and unresolved trauma to emphasise the whispers that we were deaf to, that finally force the body to shout.Refusing to rest in such circumstances, a layer-by-layer investigation uncovers the latest in scientific discoveries for how every single one of us responds to adversity, especially when faced alone:The epigenetic modifications that are made to rapidly changing environments. The subsequently raised safety thresholds that spill over beyond an individual's lifetime. The putting down of active responses and picking up of passive responses, logically carried out after normalising excessive loads placed upon a body.By objectively viewing such a human story, we find that herding abrasive observations into labels can be replaced by understanding that at each step we are being handed a calling card, and by taking a body-led approach, we can finally listen to what is being asked:To take our bodies to safety. To recognise that safety depends on compassion. To commit to relearning how to give and receive love so that we can ring-fence our experience and prevent any future re-abandonment.A product of 15 years of research, including 1,600 scientific papers cited in this work alone, practitioners and those curious about self-directed healing are offered a somatic roadmap and a subsequent reorientation towards our highest expression. Such a rite of passage not only ricochets through our own lives but also provides the chance to reset the stepping-off point for future generations, restoring clarity to individual circumstances and abundance to culture.
