A duo of 18th-century Mid-Edo Period emakimono scrolls, known as the Farting Battle and Phallic Contest Picture Scrolls, unfolds a series of unusual contests. The first scroll presents a flatulence-fueled battle, with men generating ammunition by drinking water, then unleashing mighty farts on their opponents. Creative defenses include fans as shields and farts so powerful they topple board games. The second scroll depicts a modern-day equivalent of a 'dick measuring contest,' with competitors boasting massive, unwieldy genitalia, some requiring wheelbarrows. The piece begins with prudish nobles fleeing before the competition. These scrolls are copies of the 'Victory Picture' scroll, created around 1110-1125, featuring a 'phallic contest' and 'farting battle'.
