Dirt is more than grubby, it attracts water, making the down clump, and when we sweat we transfer salts into the down fill. Washing a down product in conventional laundry detergent will leave behind a hydrophilic (water attracting) residue on both the outer fabric and the down fill. In fact, the wrong cleaner can cause dirt to redeposit onto the down.. weighing it down and causing clumping. Which is why Nikwax makes a specialized cleaner designed to revitalize down insulation, and restore the DWR, durable water repellent fabric treatment of down filled clothes and sleeping bags. Restore the restore DWR, revitalize the down insulation, and revive the breathability of your down filled items in. For best results remember to thoroughly clean the detergent dispenser in your front loading machine, and use Nikwax Down Wash Direct to pre-treat any stubborn stain spots. Use a low spin cycle at the end of the wash cycle, then use the “spin only” cycle at progressive speeds to squeeze excess moisture out without stressing the down. Fluff dry on low if the label allows, making sure you have plenty of room for expansion in the dryer, since your piece is going to puff back out again! We recommend hanging a freshly washed item in a warm, dry, space for at least 24 hours before packing it away to be sure it is thoroughly dry and ready for its next adventure.
