Green Tea

On a warm summer night, dressed for an evening on the town, a beautiful young well-to-do sophisticate, whose features sing of Africa and Asia, enjoys a cup of tea in her cool green sitting room. She casually holds a fan and casts her gaze past the decoratively framed mirror toward a classic wooden staircase. Inviting a dance of red, brown, and green hues, decorative patterns swirl throughout the composition—the intricate lace of her dress; a red velvet chair; a Persian rug; the window shade and flower arrangement atop a baby grand piano. Each element calls the viewer’s focus to land on the delicate strap over her shoulder, and toward her thoughtfully distant gaze.

“Green Tea” by Kadir Nelson is part of a series of paintings celebrating the Harlem Renaissance era. It sings a song of harmony between colors, patterns, distant cultures, and 1920s style.
