Dowie Anointed of the Lord, (Paperback)

"Dowie Anointed of the Lord" provides an intimate and comprehensive look at the life and ministry of John Alexander Dowie, one of the most influential and polarizing religious figures of his era. As the founder of the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church and the city of Zion, Illinois, Dowie claimed to be the "Restorer" and "Elijah the Prophet," attracting thousands of followers with his messages of divine healing and strict moral living. Author Arthur Newcomb, who spent years within Dowie's inner circle, explores the psychological and social dynamics of the movement, from its miraculous triumphs to its eventual financial and leadership crises.

This work serves as an essential perspective on the development of pentecostalism and the history of religious communalism in the United States. Through a narrative that balances personal observation with historical detail, Newcomb captures the fervor of the meetings at Chicago's Auditorium Building and the ambitious vision behind the establishment of a self-sustaining religious colony. "Dowie Anointed of the Lord" remains a pivotal text for understanding the charismatic leadership and utopian aspirations that shaped the American religious landscape in the early 20th century.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
