What connects mythology, art, and mathematics? The number eight holds the answer. In 8 Times 8, Harald Kraemer explores the profound significance of the number eight in Asian culture and beyond. From the eight trigrams of the I Ching to the Eight Immortals and Buddhist symbols, this work unpacks how groups of eight serve as frameworks for symbolism and artistic composition. Including nine intricately crafted objects from the UMAG collection—each structured around eight sections or motifs—this volume reveals how serial narratives and systemic design have long been embedded in Chinese art and craftsmanship. By juxtaposing these historical works with contemporary artists such as Yau Wing Fung, Daphne Alexis Ho, and Klaus Merkel, 8 Times 8 traces how these traditions continue to inspire modern artistic strategies. A compelling study of repetition and interconnected meaning, this book offers fresh insights into how numbers shape narratives, both ancient and contemporary. Read more
